Being a good lawyer is only one piece of the puzzle when it comes to operating a successful law firm, Toronto critical injury lawyer Dale Orlando tells Lawyers Weekly.
Orlando, partner with McLeish Orlando LLP, weighed in on the topic in a recent article discussing the value of business skills for entrepreneurial lawyers.
Hiring practices, marketing and relationship building are all necessary skills for lawyers who want to start their own businesses, says Orlando, who helped launch McLeish Orlando in 1999.

“You’ve got to figure out how to market your practice. You can be a great lawyer but if you don’t market your practice then you don’t have any customers and you’ve got a problem,” he tells Lawyers Weekly. “You can be a great lawyer and a great marketer, but if you can’t keep good legal assistants and law clerks and accident benefit specialists your practice will grind to a halt.”
Establishing connections with possible referral sources like health-care practitioners and real estate lawyers is one way the firm markets itself, says Orlando.
Even sending a newsletter or holiday card to a client is a way to help “remind people that you are still alive, well and practising,” Orlando says in the article.
