Insurance is a form of risk management that can be invaluable. In some cases, insurance is compulsory under the law. For example, in Ontario it is a provincial offence under the Highway Traffic Act to drive without automobile insurance.
Insurance may not legally mandated but it still may be a requirement. For instance, if you are mortgaging a home, a financial institution will demand proof that you have homeowner’s insurance before releasing funds. That is because the home will serve as security for the repayment of the mortgage loan.
Insurance is also available to protect employees who are unable to work due to illness or injury. Though not legally required to do so, many employers have long-term disability (LTD) insurance plans to protect, at least to an extent, the income stream of an employee who becomes ill or is injured.
