Campaign puts focus on visibility for cyclists

Visibility through proper lighting and reflective gear on bicycles is one of the most important aspects of road safety for cyclists, says Toronto critical injury lawyer Patrick Brown, a partner with McLeish Orlando LLP.

That’s why the firm sponsored a month-long Cycle Toronto initiative emphasizing the importance of visibility for cyclists.

As part of the campaign, volunteers gather along busy cycling commuter routes at dusk and flag down unlit cyclists, educating them on the importance of staying visible and providing them with a free set for a safe ride home.

Event kickoff

The events kicked off Oct. 6 and will conclude Oct. 27 at the Prince Edward Viaduct Parkette, across from Castle Frank subway station, from dusk to approximately 9 p.m.

“Visibility is an important part of road safety, especially for cyclists,” says Brown, an avid cyclist. “We are pleased to be part of an initiative that encourages cycling during all hours of the day.”

The Ministry of Transportation recently increased the fine for improper lighting of a bicycle from $20 to $110.

From half an hour before sunset to half an hour after sunrise, Ontarians must have a front white light and either a rear red reflector or rear red light on their bicycle. Cyclists also need to be lit when it’s dark due to rain, fog, or snow.
