By LegalMatters Staff • People are turning to their computers for online shopping as the holiday season approaches. At the same time, those engaged in online fraud are also gearing up for a record season, as the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre reports that more than $400 million has been lost to internet fraud this year.
One common fraud is offering counterfeit merchandise. The knock-off merchandise is typically lower quality than name-brand products and some pose potential health risks to buyers. Another common fraud is a fake charity. People are reminded to make sure the organization is registered with the Canada Revenue Agency before they donate any money.
Year-around frauds include romance scams. Those behind these frauds play on your emotions to gain your trust, before trying to convince you to send them money to support someone in need.
Ottawa fraud lawyer Céline Dostaler has defended many people accused of fraud. She says she starts to build a client’s defence by combing through the evidence the Crown has amassed and finding inconsistencies. She is then able to advise the client on what will be their best defence.
Those convicted of online fraud are often incarcerated, so you owe it to yourself to have competent legal representation. Experience counts in the courtroom.
