Toronto Lawyers Association has online courses to suit every need

Time is running out to sign up for Powerful Speaking Skills for Lawyers, part of the broad range of online programs and sessions offered by the Toronto Lawyers Association designed to assist lawyers in their daily practice as they earn Continuing Professional Development credits.

On April 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Bonnie Gross, CEO of SpeechScience International Inc. leads Part 1 of the program. Parts 2 and 3 will be presented on April 20 and 27.

Gross uses “a series of interactive exercises together with audio, video and computer bio-feedback technology to provide individual feedback on how to develop your voice.”

Pre-Trials for Young Lawyers will give those with less than 10 years of experience in the legal profession tips on how to prepare a case for a pre-trial conference and what strategies can be used in those conferences. The course will be held April 16 from 1 to 2 p.m. 

Superior Court justice shares her insights

Ontario Superior Court Justice Jasmine Akbarali will share her expertise and describe how to: 

  • appropriately prepare a case leading to a pre-trial conference;
  • draft a pre-trial conference memorandum;
  • identify and use effective strategies during pre-trial conferences; and
  • take advantage of any momentum that comes from the pre-trial conference.

Toronto cannabis lawyers Matt Maurer and Russell Bennett led a frank discussion about the potential perils of practising cannabis law. Those who are curious about the latest developments in marijuana law will want to tune into Cannabis: Everything you Always Wanted to Know* (*But Were Afraid to Ask) on April 20 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. as the following topics are explored:

  • Corporate
  • Retail
  • Commercial Leasing
  • Medical cannabis growing under part 14, and
  • Ethical Issues

Seasoned lawyers share expertise

If you are starting out as a Wills and Estates lawyer, or have experience but need a refresher, then you’ll want to join a panel of seasoned lawyers for Wills and Estates Lawyers: A Potpourri Of Considerations.

During this webinar on April 29, from 5:15 to 7 p.m. the panel will:

  • Delve into the issue of assisted dying (MAID).
  • Consider the drafting and explain the impact of no-contest clauses, burial clauses, and special trustee clauses.
  • Explore secondary will drafting issues and estate administration challenges.
  • Discuss legal updates including blended families, divorce and estate planning, and posthumously conceived children.
  • Review, and comment on, dependent support claims.

NCA Network will host  Preparing for Bar Exams – Presented by Darren Smith at Emond on May 4 at 5 p.m. Smith,  business and product manager, Emond Exam Prep and Law School, will help prepare participants for everything bar exam-related and offer useful tips on how to succeed. There will also be a Q&A session.

Program examines equality, diversity, inclusion

On May 14, Law Society of Ontario treasurer Teresa Donnelly will spearhead Strengthening Connections to the Law Society. The program, which runs from 1 to 2 p.m., will examine:

  • equality, diversity and inclusion
  • resources
  • mental health
  • public interest and perceptions
  • engagement and outreach

Selected TLA programs are available as web replays through CPDOnline about two weeks after the event. While CPDOnline sets their own pricing and TLA pricing does not apply to CPDOnline replays, TLA members may take advantage of discounts on replays of TLA programs only.
