If you steal something, such as a lawnmower from a garage or money from a cash register, you could be charged with theft. However, if you threaten or physically strike someone in order to take an item from them, you have committed robbery, which is a more serious crime. Across Alberta, there were 2,837 robberies in 2021, according to Statistics Canada. That’s down from 3,647 in 2019. In 2021, 953 adults in Alberta were charged with this crime, along with 192 youths.
